16-year-old Transgender Murdered in Jamaica: Hated to Death

Dwayne Jones, "Gully Queen" - Victim
On July 22, 2013 Dwayne Jones a Trans-gender otherwise known as "GULLY QUEEN" and "Dwayne Gagastar Trensetta" was shot and stabbed to death in the Irwin community, St James.

According to Iriefm news report, "the 16-year-old was dressed as a female and was dancing with a male, when a woman at the party recognized him and told other patrons that he was not a woman, but a male. One of the men at the party accosted the teen and conducted a search where he discovered that the teen was not a female. A mob then descended on the teen and chopped and stabbed him to death, before dumping his body in bushes along the Orange main road."

Furthermore, the Jamaica-Gleaner reported that, "a number of explosions were heard and the police were summoned. They discovered Jones’ body on the roadway, with multiple stab wounds and a gunshot wound." No arrest has been made.

The brutal killings and public execution of gay, lesbian and trans-gender Jamaicans is a disheartening reality for many who live in the open and shadows. In December 2010, the Jamaica Forum for Lesbians All-Sexuals and Gays (J-FLAG) called for a thorough investigation of a case in which the body of a reported cross dresser was found with stab wounds in St Andrew. However, the murder remains unsolved due to a lack of interest demonstrated by the investigation team and police authorities due to the victims’ sexuality and lifestyle (gay).

The lack of respect and protection for the life of gays living in Jamaica demonstrates a systematic and cultural prejudice and hatred for homosexuals and the air they breathe. The government and its leader Prime Minister Portia Simpson continue to disregard the interest, safety and the right to life of gay, lesbian, and trans-gender Jamaicans.

The punitive laws of Jamaica, such as the Offences Against the Person Act (Buggery law) which criminalizes the act of consensual anal sex between gay men, and public demonstration of homosexuality up to 10 years in prison with hard labor, along with the moral concept of normality, empower and motive anti-gay civilians and mobs to attack, beat and kill gays, as well as rape lesbians.

Clearly, over the past years, we have seen the abuse of the rights and dignity of gays living in Jamaica. In January 2011, (J-FLAG) recorded fifty-one incidents of attacks against LGBT including, home invasions, physical assaults and mob attacks.
In June 2012, members of the Jamaican LGBT community reported that eight gay men had been murdered in the prior three months.
The organization has also emphases the lack of report being made by victims of homophobic attacks due to fear of future attacks or abuses,  especially from the police officers, who often refuse to take or document self-identified gay victims incidents.

When will our gay brothers and sisters be free from bondage and persecution? How much more innocent blood will be shed before the government step in and protect the lives of GAY Jamaicans?

Besides the killing and beating of homosexuals, Jamaica is a violent and dangerous country. We cannot stand by and watch the culprits and anti-gay lynching mobs to get away with murder.  Something needs to be done. Dwayne Jones deserves justice.

    2. There's ignorance everywhere in the world. For you to generalize and call "Jamaicans" ignorant shows the depth of your own ignorance. I've heard of gay beatings in the U.S.A. but you don't hear us calling "Americans" ignorant. If you don't live or Jamaica nor have you spent any length of time in Jamaica then please don't form an opinion of Jamaicans based of the actions of a few. Try focusing on the faults in your own country before you go taking up the issues of other countries. Moron.

    3. Jamaicans are ignorant and I am Jamaican. I have dealt with their backward behavior since childhood and I am as straight as an arrow. I had a friend they called "Homo" and he had to accept his name. I had to save the kid many times from being beaten when we walked across the park from Priory...We need to accept that our nation is ignorant..Ignorant to the fact that Homosexuals are humans, they have their rights as we do and it sickens me that this is still happening..the previous writer before nickstel and carriegirl is correct..Why do you get offended..Maybe we cannot stomach the truth

    6. Yes i will say jamaican is ignorant and we dont like to hear the truth, we cannot go around killing people because
they might be gay or les, we stll need to respect people no matter who they are, but from the time i know myself
we r a nasty and the amount of church that is in jamaica, i think we should live ip to it, homosexual are humans and they have their rights as we do, Dwayne Brown, Mum it sad for her but she should play apart in her child death but she didnt want to know him, I will always said my country it gone pass the dog and no one is there to stop it, Portia, hey she is the last one and she is the first tell me how we work this one out, am born jamaican and i will not hide the truth we dirty.

  • To the author of the article: Thanks for bringing this incident to the forefront. In the spirit of learning and providing information, I must point out that transgender is an adjective and NOT a noun. So, the headline should read "17-year-old transgender woman murdered...." This is, of course, assuming that the person was in fact transgender and not just in drag...because you can't call someone trans unless he or she identifies as such.

Now lets take a Poll how many Men in Jamaica enjoy Anal Sex?

Should we Shoot Them? Should we Think its a matter of Time before they engage in this behavior with Men?

No! Not at all!!! What we can do is... Honor The Dead... by Not making excuse the The Living..

  • I don't support their lifestyle at all. Yes we talk about having the right to choose whatever we want and do as we please but remember that without some control in society, we couldn't maintain order and civility. I may not support their lifestyle as I said but I don't believe in violence against them because of it. They are still human beings after all. Jamaican society is the way it is against gays and transgenered because of not one, but many factors. We can "educate" the people as some say what if that doesn't work?. What will we do about people who still don't like or accept gays?. As the old saying goes "we can lead the horse to the water but can't force him to drink it". So you CAN'T force to accept gays. change is internalized. To end, I hope God consoles this young man's family and may his soul rest in peace. His death was unnecessary and uncalled for

  • This is such sad news , and what saddens me most is that I don't see things getting better for LGBT persons in the Jamaica, the culture of hatred towards gays, homophobia , transphobia is so ingrained in the Jamaican psyche , that it seems impossible to overcome, and while we are trying to create a better society that encourages human dignity and rights , more persons are going to get injured or die.

I'm truly saddened. ..May his soul rest in peace.

Jamaicans r homophobic n Americans legalized it, --<< well some States!!! Problems n Issues, its here, its there, its everywhere... What we all must learn to do is to accept each other's indifference's without being radical... However, where can the line be drawn, n who r we 2 bring such conclusive judgement? One will argue that Gays r born that way n that it should be accept as such, while other's could argue that a Child Molester/Rapist/Murders/Thief's were all born that way n therefore should be accepted as well, especially when rehabilitated n released, only 2 re-offend, << then they were born that way, right? Yet we won't accept that, n funny thing is in that same group that won't accept that r individuals that won't accept Homosexuals, while the other half of the group might!!! Listen y'all, GOD should b the only Judge for all Human issues!!!

    3. My condolences to the Dwayne Jones, "Gully Queen" Family, may his Soul b RIP!!! Sorry for your lost!!!

    4. Yes..What Happen at Sandy Brook... was Sad & Heartless innocent...Children Shot Down..Like moving Targets.

I was wondering how do you equate Sandy Brook with Savage stabbing mutilation of Murder of a 17 year old transgender Male? Other Than they were Both senseless Murders?

I want to understand your Point...

    5. Education is needed for all. Education does bring understanding, enlightenment, and acceptance. Sadly, it only works for some people, not all people. In a perfect world, everybody would be able to accept and respect everyone for who they are. But, as you know, this is definitely NOT a perfect world!!!

What I am writting here, is in no way at all making an excuse for what happened in Jamaica.
Those actions are never excusable for any country! I am transgendered myself and I live in the USA. I've spoken with hundred's of people from around the world, about LGBT issues. Almost all of them(except the UK) said they thought that being a Lesbian, Gay, BI-Sexual, or Transgendered(LGBT) person in the USA, is better and safer than anywhere else in the world(except maybe the UK). It might look that way to other countries, but(I'm embarrassed to say) it's not true!
Look up the statistics for Violence Against LGBT People. I think thats what its called, I can't remember? It includes all the statistics for crimes committed against the LGBT people, from non-violent crimes, to beatings and murders. They use percentages, taking into account the total known population number of people living in the country, verses the known(reported) number of crimes against LGBT people. I think you would be suprised to see The United States of America*** at the top of the list! The USA looked like a wonderful place to live if you were LGBT, because there was little to no news coverage, good or bad, about the LGBT community. It has really only been only in the past 5 to 10 years that news agencies have actually started to cover LGBT stories.
This is one reason people want to hate everybody from places like Jamaica. They don't know who to hate and blame, so they hate and blame everybody who lives there. When this happens, everything beautiful and wonderful about the country disappears from the peoples view. After that, ugliness is all the people can see!!!
***In Recent Weeks, With The Escalating Violence And Crimes Against The LGBT Community By Russia and Greece, The United States Has Dropped Tremendously On The List.

What happened in Jamaica and is still happening in Jamaica, is completely appalling!!!
I pray for his/her family, that they can get through this tragedy. I hope and pray other countries will get involved and pressure Jamaica, Russia and Greece, and force them to stop the madness!!! Force them to pass legislation giving equal rights to all peoples no matter their sexual orientation, or anything else!

I hope this might help explain a few things and not confuse people more???
PLEASE RESPECT EVERYONE, NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE, OR WHAT THEIR SEXUAL PREFERENCE IS!!!

  • I think it is sad that people are openly murdering innocent persons like but the its reality. He lives in a country that will forever be homophobic, no law would or will protect him, so why go in the open like that? isnt it better to practice whatever the hell does within his walls of protection? I think its rather stupid for gays to be coming out in the open like that. Im not violent and i honestly dont care about their sexual preferences, its just reality, its obviously theyre not taking it serious. JFLAG cant protect them all especially when some of these proclaimed lesbians and gays make it an excuse to commit crime and disrupt the public.

I can not understand why black people still a kill the one another when we are all hated by the rest of the world. it's about time black people let go off the slave mentality and start to love one another because no one is going to love us more than we.

However we find the killing very much brutal and in disgust of how persons must be treated as Humans. My word goes to all Gays Lesbians and Heterosexuals we all want the rights let us not invade eachother spaces.....

  • For such a beautiful country that has a proud musical heritage of singing about equality, repression, brotherhood and loving one another, they sure have a LOUSY way of showing it. This wasn't one person committing a hate crime, but an entire group of (supposedly normal) people having a good time dancing and partying until a transgender teen was "outed" which led to the entire party engaging in cutting up this person, and dumping her on the side of the road. I am curious if the girl that outed Dwayne has any idea (or remorse) of what she did to her fellow citizen and to the reputation of Jamaica. Couldn't they just ask the teen to leave?

I grew up visiting the West Indies and Caribbean as a child and have fond memories of the most gracious, heart warming, welcoming people there (Including Jamaica). And I certainly do not blame all of the people of Jamaica. However, it is time your country woke up joined the twenty first century. Right now, LGBT people everywhere are rallying to make certain that we do everything possible to boycott all tourism and imports involving Jamaica.

Please practice what your music preaches and love one another.

Trans hate MUST stop!! We must end transphobia.

And there IS NO choice involved in being transgender, lesbian, or gay, it's who we are and no one has truly stopped being that, they just learn to hide it and lie about it, it's so sad when a youth gets killed and people justify it...sad, and most homophobes and transphobes ARE closeted gays, lesbians, and transgender...open your eyes people...

  • So we're all just going to ignore the deception and disingenuity that are key factors in this incident? The fact that this young man deceived heterosexual men and was dancing with and grinding on them? This is not about homophobia, this is about a silly young man that decides it was a good idea to dance in a sexually suggestive manner with straight men. I disagree with his killing but one cannot deny that his actions provoked a particular response.

  • I am sooo sorry that he had to die this way. I do not and will not by any means support homesexuality as God's words strictly prohibits it. However, we are all human beings who God created and loves. We must get to a point where we have respect for life. I do not want for homosexuality to become legal in Jamaica but this young man's life should not have been taken in the way it was. All sin is sin before God. Who are we to judge?

Like many of us (straight people) his lifestyle was sinful before God but his chance to repent was ignorantly taken away from him.

    Its really sad!
